Podcast: Transmission and Distribution System Coordination to Support DERs

Andrea Derby - Friday, July 28, 2017

I am always in search of new and engaging content about the power industry, and was so excited to find the Grid Geeks podcast. The show, hosted by Allison Clements is great! Allison introduces the topics and leads the conversation in such a way that is pleasant to listen to and easy to understand. They are the perfect duration, around 30 minutes. I am not quite current (I have way too many podcasts in my queue!) but this week I listened to the Grid Geeks episode #4 about Transmission and Distribution System Coordination to Support DERs. It was a wonderful interview of Matthew Tisdale who is the Executive Director of More Than Smart, which is an organization “whose mission is to support policy-makers and stakeholders pursuing cleaner, more reliable, and more affordable electricity service through the integration of distributed energy resources into electricity grids.”

In the podcast, Allison and Matthew discussed More Than Smart’s new report on operational issues that need to be addressed between the transmission and distribution systems to reliably facilitate a high DER future. The report and the recommendations are California focused, but can be applied elsewhere too. That’s because it all comes down to open communication and collaboration between distribution system operators and transmission system operators.
The podcast, and the report, are very interesting and a good peek into the future of a more integrated electric grid as the lines blur around traditional roles and systemic silos but reliability and affordability remain top priorities.
